Nothing Remains

I retreat behind the ramparts
Taking refuge within my bastion
Protected by walls years in the making
A fortress born of pain and disappointment
A fool's errand, to find respite
Betrayed was I by the voice within
I should know that only suffering awaits
Tearing at old wounds that have never healed
How could I ever dare to dream
Fire quenched can not be rekindled
I can not give that which has been given
Nor hope to heal another when I am broken
It is folly to seek a new outcome
One can not repel the tide by desire
Nor deny the lot which fate has drawn
That which burdens me can not be shared
And so I will tend to the walls
Repair those which have crumbled
Build within an impenetrable redoubt
Vanquishing any remnants of desire and hope
Hope is a double edged sword and it can cut equally in either dirrection.

Ah, but let us not forget that through hope we find our true self, and what it has and has not. Embarking among a ritual of pain and despair for the have not and a joyous celebration for the findings with in our self that make us stronger.
